Hi!! As many of you know, I met Robert, the original source of the tree currently known as Ben’s Golden Riverside, several weeks back. I have stayed in communication with him and informed him of the popularity of his fantastic variety. I told him about the $1600 that was raised for the victims of the Paradise Fire because of his trees!! He was blown away. I also told him about Figbid and informed him that many people would love to buy direct from him and he could make some nice side money. He wasn’t interested at first but it looks like he is having fun with this now and has expressed an interest since I let him know that so many people are messaging me asking for it but I don’t have much left and didn’t feel good about trying to get it from him to sell for a profit.
In addition, we have been working hard to find out what the original name was and have not been able to conclusively determine this as of yet. However, lots of people think it looks similar to Yellow Long Neck or Long Yellow. He and I have not seen the resemblance based off pics but our climate could be quite different.
Robert got the original tree in 2003 from his nephew who was a member of the CRFG and in the region where George Emerich was and they knew each other quite well. My understanding is that George was responsible for finding Yellow Long Neck. However, Robert’s nephew does not remember if that’s what he gave Robert. He actually said it may have been an unknown that was found in what he called a “hippie commune”.
So, here’s a bit of fantastic news. Robert is going to be selling these direct on Figbid in a day or two but he wasn’t comfortable with the current name since he now knows that it isn’t correct. When he first sold it to Ben, he had looked online and found pics of Golden Riverside and thought that was what he had and told Ben that was the name. Well, it is NOT UC Golden Riverside. At least that much is known.
This fig is absolutely beautiful and goes through a myriad of colors from deep yellow green monstrous brebas to golden, reddish, blue shaded almost Rimada type fruits. Robert informed me last night that he was going to call this “Golden Rainbow”.
I had made it clear before that I am not responsible for renaming a fig that I have nothing to do with. This did not come from me, even though I am inadvertently responsible for it. Please don’t be upset with me for the name change.
Robert is thrilled that so many people love his fig. He has been making and selling locally his “baby trees” for many years and had no idea that he was sitting on a variety that is so fantastic.
Please get the the word out and keep an eye out for Robert’s listings on Figbid and support him.
