The beech seeds were outside all winter. Because of the wet winter I think it was good that I put the beech seeds in a layer of sharp sand. I checked the seeds earlier this week and they are starting to germinate.

The seeds that had a root were put aside.

And were sown in a tree seed tray (Kindly given to me by a local nursery man).

Because of the recent warm weather germination and growth is excellent.

The beech tree seedlings keep on growing and have reached a length of approximately 25 cm at the start of July. Note that the seedlings are in a polytunnel where it is considerably warmer then outside. I have also beech seedlings outside that are app. 15 cm high. These suffered from some hail showers in May and snails. A possible downside of having beech seedlings in a polytunnel is that plants can suffer from woolly aphids so I have to check them regularly.

Roots look very healthy and the seedlings have to be repotted.
